What’s new in 2026
In 2026 Australia, along with the Southern Hemisphere will complete its transition from Quadrivalent (4 strain vaccine) to a Trivalent (3 strain vaccine) flu vaccines.
Why the change?
The B/Yamagata influenza B strain has not been detected since the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends removing it from seasonal influenza vaccines.
This change mirrors the Northern Hemisphere, which began its transition during the 2024-2025 season.
Despite the change, annual vaccination remains the most important strategy to prevent influenza and its complications.
Is influenza considered serious?
Infected persons may become unwell for up to a week. Most patients take up to 2 weeks to recover from influenza, however it can cause complications or even death. Some of the complications can include: pneumonia, bronchitis, croup and ear infections.
Can I have the flu shot if I am pregnant?
The flu vaccine can be safely given during any stage of pregnancy. It is recommended that pregnant women get immunised, as they are at higher risk of severe flu or complications from the influenza virus.
Is the Flu vaccination effective?
Flu vaccines are 70%-90% effective. They are the best protection from the influenza virus and will minimise the spread of the flu to your family, friends and colleagues.
Can you catch the flu from the flu shot?
You cannot catch the flu from a flu vaccine. The flu shot is made from an inactivated virus that cannot transmit infection.
Do you offer the over 65’s flu vaccine?
We are one of only a select few that can offer the over 65 vaccine during a corporate vaccination session. The over 65 vaccine is a government funded vaccine and whilst the actual vaccine is free, there is an applicable cost associated with the delivery of the vaccine during a corporate session.
Is there an online booking system?
Yes. Health Watch Australia has a user friendly booking system which can be customised for each client.
Who administers the flu vaccine?
Health Watch Australia only employs Division 1 Immunisation Nurses and General Practitioners to administer their flu vaccinations. As a rule, Health Watch Australia does not use contractors or agency nurses during their annual flu vaccination programs.
